Autism Awareness

Welcome to our page dedicated to Autism Awareness Month. Every April, we join communities around the globe to shine a light on autism, a neurological and developmental disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. This month-long observance is a time to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community, and to promote acceptance and inclusion for all those affected by it.

History:

Autism Awareness Month was first declared by the Autism Society in the United States in April 1970 to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism. It was later adopted by the United Nations in 2007, and April 2nd was officially designated as World Autism Awareness Day. This day marks the start of Autism Awareness Month and is recognized internationally as a day to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder throughout the world.

Significance:

The significance of Autism Awareness Month cannot be overstated. It serves as a reminder of the strides we have made in understanding and accepting autism, and the work that still needs to be done. It is a time to celebrate the unique talents and skills of persons with autism, and to generate more widespread acceptance for the diverse experiences and needs of the autism community.

World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day, celebrated on April 2nd, is a key event in Autism Awareness Month. Sanctioned by the United Nations, it is a day dedicated to raising awareness and fostering understanding of people with autism. Landmarks, buildings, homes, and communities around the world light up in blue, a campaign initiated by Autism Speaks, to show support and acceptance for people with autism.

Activities and Events

Throughout April, various activities and events are organized to promote understanding and acceptance of the autism community.

These include educational events, community gatherings, online webinars, and fundraising initiatives.

The Autism Society and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) also organize events and share resources to foster worldwide support and connect people.

The theme for Autism Acceptance Month is "Celebrate Differences," which aims to raise awareness, promote autism acceptance, celebrate individual differences, and foster inclusivity and connectedness

Light It Up Blue Initiative

The Light It Up Blue initiative, created by Autism Speaks in 2010, encourages landmarks, buildings, homes, and communities around the world to light up blue on World Autism Awareness Day in recognition of people with autism
